YMCA of Southern Indiana Gets $13,000 Boost from AT&T Foundation to Help Students Succeed

Grant supports mentoring, case management in Clark, Floyd counties

NEW ALBANY, Ind., Dec. 9, 2019 — The AT&T Foundation has granted $13,000 to the YMCA of Southern Indiana for its Student Success Programs.

According to the YMCA, Student Success Programs combine two proven strategies that help teenagers be successful in school and life: caring mentoring and supportive case management. They create a safe environment for minority and low-income Southern Indiana youth to remove life and school barriers to success.

“The Y does so much to serve our community, including working every day to create an interactive environment that helps students develop leadership skills and build character,” said State Rep. Ed Clere. “This funding boost continues AT&T’s long history of supporting efforts to help Southern Indiana thrive.”

Through DIAMONDS (the girls Student Success Program) and Y-CAP (the boys program), the YMCA will serve 60 students from Floyd and Clark counties directly, along with their parents and families. The New Albany programs meet twice after school at the Floyd County Family YMCA. The Jeffersonville programs meet twice after school at the Clark County YMCA. Activity days, community service, college tours, company tours, or field trips are planned at least once a month by the students and take place outside of the after-school program time and throughout the summer.

“Our mentoring curriculum is built around leadership development, drug prevention, anger management, career exploration and cultural diversity,” said YMCA of Southern Indiana Development and Grant Specialist Dennis Enix. “This mentoring, coupled with case management that helps the whole family overcome obstacles, has consistently made a positive impact on the community. We’re so pleased that AT&T recognized that and supported our programs.”

"We are very excited about the opportunity to help the foundation continue to boost education-related efforts in this region," said AT&T Indiana President Bill Soards on behalf of the AT&T Foundation. "We have a long heritage of not only supporting communities, but also students. Working with the foundation allows us to bring those areas together in a unique and powerful way."
