Agency Mission Statement or Description:

The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kentuckiana is to provide the home and support that allows families to stay together while they focus on the healing of their sick children at a critical time. Thousands of families travel to Louisville so their children may receive the best medical care possible. We serve as a soft landing place for them.

Our staff and volunteers strive to make a family’s stay less stressful by providing as many of the comforts of home as possible. We provide each family with a clean room and fresh linens. Almost every evening, generous volunteers from our community prepare a home-cooked meal. We have four fully stocked kitchens in our House, and each floor has a living room, dining area, laundry room, and restrooms. In addition to the comforts of home, families are not obligated to contribute to the cost of their accommodations while they stay with us; hopefully relieving additional burden to being far from home.

Year established: 1984 (We are celebrating 35 years this year!)

Counties/regions serviced:

We help families from anywhere outside of Jefferson County, KY and Floyd and Clark County, IN. This is so we may serve the families who must travel the furthest for their children to receive the best medical care possible.

Focus areas:

The health and well-being of children and their families.

Impact in community:

We are home to approximately 1,500 families every year. We help families save more than $1.1 million in lodging expenses and additional costs of food, transportation, and other needs for living far from home. We provide families the opportunity to stay together, remaining strong, hopeful, and encouraged. We also provide a space where families can meet and support each other that truly does not exist anywhere else in the community.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Friends in our community can volunteer to cook meals for our families. We have monthly volunteers who are the extension of our staff – helping us make our House a warm, comfortable home. We welcome groups who are looking to give some of their time to help. We also seek friends who are willing to collect items from our Wish List.

How 1si members can help your organization:

We would love members to visit us for a tour and see how we help our families. We also encourage members to be an advocate for us and introduce us to others in the community that may want to help us in our pursuit to keeping our families together in their time of need.

Additional information:

We are expanding! We are under construction! We will grow from 36 private guestrooms to 56 rooms and more than double our square footage footprint. We are very excited about this opportunity to help more families at one time as the demand continues to grow and the children’s hospital expands, too. We look to open with a beautifully renovated space in 2020.
