Please use 300 words or less to describe your agency and your impact in the community.

Agency Mission Statement or Description: To ensure all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community.

Year established: 2007

Counties/regions served: Southern Indiana, Kentucky

Focus areas: Social and emotional support for men, women and children living with cancer.

Impact in community: Since opening in 2007, Gilda’s Club has served more than 8,000 people living with 55 different types of cancer—one quarter of whom are children. In addition to the damage it causes the body, cancer has a tremendous impact on the mind. We treat the “other” symptoms of cancer—fear, anxiety and depression—through social and emotional support that works in tandem with medical care.

At Gilda’s Club, families join together to create a community of support where they can safely share and explore their cancer journeys. Our 100+ free programs each month—support groups, music and art, lectures and workshops, healthy lifestyle programs and social events—provide families an opportunity to come together and enjoy life while cancer is a part of it.

We offer support groups in southern Indiana at the Pat Harrison Cancer Resource Center (1206 Spring Street, Jeffersonville, IN). Presently, a wellness group for men and women living with an active cancer diagnosis and an adult friends and family group are offered on Thursday evenings. New program offerings will be added in the future. Along with our new clubhouse on Grinstead Drive and a branch office in west Louisville at the Passport Health Campus (in 2020), we are making a real impact on quality of life and health outcomes for those in our community living with cancer.

Volunteer Opportunities: Gilda’s Club has a 90 to 1 ratio of volunteers to paid staff. With more than 100 monthly programs, we rely on volunteers to take on many roles. We have opportunities that span a few hours in a single day to volunteer leadership roles that are ongoing. Contact Jessica Carner (jessica@gidlasclublouisville.org), Director of Volunteer Engagement, for more information.

How 1si members can help your organization: One Southern Indiana offers the opportunity to spread the word about the critical services Gilda’s Club offers, most notably, support groups at the Pat Harrison Cancer Resource Center. 1si could be instrumental in ensuring our Southern Indiana neighbors know about the free, essential support we offer families living with cancer.
