One Southern Indiana Announces ONE Awards Winners

New Albany, Ind. - (April 17, 2018) – One Southern Indiana (1si) announced the winners of its 30th annual ONE Awards at a dinner held at Huber’s Orchard, Winery & Vineyard’s Plantation Hall on Thursday, April 12, 2018. More than 350 attendees celebrated the success of these local and regional businesses.

The program recognized finalists in seven business categories who were showcased in customized videos before representatives of each award’s sponsor announced the winners. Nominees’ scores were evaluated by a panel of judges based on criteria including business history, community involvement, response to adversity, newly-created opportunities, and innovation in products or services. Nominees were also scored through an online poll.

Eventful 203, winner of the Commerce Bank Rising Star ONE Award – Presented to an outstanding company less than five year in existence

Located in beautiful, historic New Albany, Indiana, Eventful 203 is a unique meeting and wedding-planning resource center focused on creating a relaxed and inspired way of planning your events. The store front, located on the second floor of 203 West 1st Street in New Albany, features more than twenty vendors every bride needs to make her special day perfect.

The excellent service of owner Laurie Haag propelled the small business forward. In 2016, Eventful 203 expanded to its current location, next to Seeds and Greens Natural Market and Deli, where the planners typically stay booked six months to a year in advance. This high demand called for an increase in staff from 1 to 6 after business sales doubled in the first three years.

One of the highlights of Eventful 203 is the Laurel and Lavender Beauty Lounge, where brides and their parties can bring in (or take advantage of in-house) stylists and makeup artists on the day of their wedding. The service also features a resource library, consultation area, and a high- end bridal dress boutique.

Communities in Schools of Clark County - CIS Model of Integrated Student Supports, winner of the Nu-Yale Nonprofit Program of the Year ONE Award – Presented to a nonprofit 1si member with an innovative and successful program, initiative or activity.

Communities in Schools (CIS) of Clark County works directly with Clarksville, Greater Clark, and West Clark school districts to provide student and family support services. The organization currently supports 17 sites serving grades K-12. The CIS Model provides Integrated student supports (ISS) in a three-tier system designed to meet the particular needs of all students within the school. The CIS Model is provided in the school building, during the school day.
Tier one services are widely available services designed to foster a positive school experience. Tier two services are targeted services typically provided in a group setting to students with a common need. Finally, tier three services are intensive, individualized services typically provided in a one-on-one setting to students with highly specific needs. Tier three services could include individual tutoring, behavior management and goal-setting, counseling and therapy, case management, tutoring in reading and, in some cases, solicitation and distribution of emergency basic needs items for low-income, homeless or displaced students and families.
In the 2016-2017 school year, the CIS Model affected the lives of over 4,500 elementary and middle school students. With the assistance of community partners, the staff of CIS of Clark County documented the following outcomes:
• 89% of students who received tutoring from a CIS Resource Coordinator maintained or improved grades over the course of the school year;
• 315 students received counseling from a licensed Centerstone therapist provided by CIS; More than 1,400 first grade students from all three Clark County school systems received free vision screenings from volunteer optometrists;
• 425 students received academic assistance through CIS Homework Clubs and In-School tutoring;
• 105 students met individually each week with community volunteers to work on reading skills for a total of 1,944 hours in the 3,2,1 READ program;
• Nearly 2,000 new books were given to students in the 3,2,1 READ program; and
• 82% of 3,2,1 READ students maintained or improved their reading grades over the course of the school year.

Mister ‘‘P’’ Express, Inc., winner of the Stites & Harbison, PLLC Economic Development Impact Project of the Year ONE Award – presented to an economic development project that will have a lasting impact on the community at large

A report from the American Trucking Association says more than 70 percent of goods consumed in the U.S. are moved by truck, but the industry needs to hire almost 900,000 more drivers to meet rising demand. That is not news to Mister “P” Express, Inc., founders Allan and Bunny Parnell, nor to the current president and CEO, daughter Cynthia Collier.

Determined to tackle the shortage head on, leaders at the company have recently broken ground on a 16-acre over-the-road (OTR) driving school. Mister “P” Express, Inc., OTR Driving School offers students a 160-hour course that will prepare them for an entry-level position as an OTR driver.

Mister “P” Express, Inc., started training drivers in 2006 and has certified well over 1,000 students. The new facility will feature the most extensive truck driver training available, including hands-on experience, coupling and uncoupling, driver logs, and trip planning. The new space will allow for Mister “P” Express, Inc. to work with 100 students each session, and company leaders plan to hire new instructors based on demand.

Heartland - A Global Payments Company - Heartland University, winner of the Strothman and Company WorkHub Innovation ONE Award – presented to a company for an encompassing program working in diversity, workplace health and company culture.

Heartland Payment Systems - A Global Payments Company developed a partnership with Ivy Tech Community College and Indiana Tech University to provide employees at the Jeffersonville, Ind., Service Center an opportunity to complete an associate’s and/or bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. This partnership and educational initiative, formed in 2011, was named Heartland University. Heartland University is designed to allow employees with no college experience, as well as those with some college credits, to work toward completing their degrees.

Classes meet each week at the Heartland Service Center and are taught by instructors from Ivy Tech Community College and Indiana Tech University. Each course is accelerated, allowing employees to move through the classes relatively quickly instead of the normal time of 16 weeks. Employees enrolled in the program are divided into groups and advance through the program together. Having this program allows employees to graduate debt free and the curriculum is customized to deliver specific courses that will be relatable to the job.

When launched six years ago, 20 employees enrolled in the new program. Now, more than 70 employees are actively enrolled, and Heartland University has graduated 40 employees. By May 2018, another seven graduates will be added to the total.

SmartBox, LLC, winner of the BB&T Business Retention and Expansion Project of the Year ONE Award – presented to a company who has expanded their footprint in Southern Indiana, retaining the jobs they currently offer as well as creating new positions.

SmartBox, LLC, creator of an industry-leading Patient Attraction System™ designed to help dentists attract more patients, engaged in a $1.18 million expansion of the company’s headquarters at 821 Mount Tabor Road in New Albany, Ind. SmartBox anticipates creating up to 100 new, high-wage jobs, in addition to the 80 currently employed.

Over the past few years, SmartBox, LLC, has achieved more than 1,600 percent growth. The company is listed 259th in the 2016 Inc. magazine 500 list, which recognizes the 500 fastest- growing private companies in the country.

SmartBox, LLC, has been featured on Inc.’s list of fastest growing private U.S. companies for two years. Founded by local entrepreneur Colin Receveur, son of New Albany dentist Ron Receveur, SmartBox is currently serving more than 550 dentists on three continents. In addition, the entrepreneur is a speaker and author of several books on internet marketing, including The Four Horsemen of Dentistry: Survival Strategies for the Private Dental Practice Under Siege.
German American Bank Business of the Year ONE Award (50 or fewer employees)

Mediaura, winner of the German American Bank Business of the Year with 50 or Fewer Employees ONE Award – presented to a noteworthy company with less than 50 employees and that demonstrates business growth, exceptional company culture, innovation and community involvement.

Mediaura is a digital advertising company founded by Andrew Aebersold in 2003 that provides website design, online advertising and search optimization. The company prides itself on delivering measurable results with their online advertising techniques that help businesses get the most out of their advertising budget. Mediaura has been listed as one of Louisville Business First’s Fast 50 for three consecutive years due to their tremendous growth. This is aided by the company’s client makeup, which is a mixture of local and national brands spread across several different vertical markets, allowing them to insulate their business somewhat from the ups and downs of a volatile economy.

However, when challenges present themselves, Mediaura responds with skill and confidence. In 2017, after the loss of two major clients, Mediaura pivoted to expand their services to new markets and industries where they could leverage previous successes to attract new clients. For example, with their previous experience with Yum! Brands, Long John Silvers, and Marco’s Pizza, Mediaura engaged a partner in the fast food industry to target new clients.

Founded in 1994, HMS Global Maritime is an internationally respected, full-service marine management company led by maritime professionals with decades of combined experience. In addition, HMS Global Maritime has evolved into one of the industry’s premier passenger vessel and marine management firms.
