Free BBB Document Shredding Event in New Albany on May 12th

BBB serving Louisville, Southern Indiana, and Western Kentucky, along with Stock Yards Bank and Kroger, want to help YOU prevent ID theft with a FREE shredding event in Southern Indiana this spring!

Identity theft hit an all-time high in 2016. An estimated 15.4 million consumers were hit with some form of ID theft, with $16 billion lost.

Here is more information on the FREE shred event:

DATE: Saturday, May 12, 2018

TIME: 9:00am until 11:00am

WHERE: New Albany Kroger parking lot, 2864 Charlestown Rd, New Albany, IN

RULES: Consumers are allowed to shred up to 3 boxes of documents for FREE. While this event is free, donations are welcome to benefit BBB’s Consumer Education Fund, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that promotes the charitable and educational programs of your local BBB. These programs range from conducting scam prevention programs for senior citizens to offering a BBB Student Video and Poster Scholarship Contest that awards thousands of dollars of scholarship money to local high school students. Consumers are encouraged to drop off any documents that contain bank account numbers, social security numbers, birth dates, or pin numbers. Please note: no batteries, cords, glass, or steel objects can be mixed with the papers.

Here are more tips on Identity Theft from your BBB:

  • Do not keep Social-Security card in wallet or purse
  • Do not put bills or checks in your home mailbox for pickup
  • Check credit reports, bank statements and credit-card statements often for irregularities
  • Shred all documents with personal information
  • Never give personal information to someone on phone, internet or email claiming to be your bank.
  • Do not store credit-card number on shopping websites

“Fighting identity theft is a constant battle,” says Reanna Smith-Hamblin, President/CEO, for BBB/Louisville. “We are all potential victims, so it’s important that we all take steps to fight identity theft, and this free shred event is a great place to start!”
