JEFFERSONVILLE AWARDED STATE GRANT TO HELP DEVELOP ARTS AND CULTURAL DISTRICT

The City of Jeffersonville was awarded a $220,000 state tourism grant for the development of its Arts and Cultural District. The money will be used to create a home for artists, makers, historians, inventors and others to have a workspace in underutilized buildings and greenspaces.

“With our new arts and cultural district, we’re creating something every special that will be a destination point in our downtown,” said Mayor Mike Moore of the district commonly called North of Court or NOCO because it encompasses several blocks north of Court Avenue. “It’s going to be an exciting place to visit. It’s just another reason our downtown is enjoying such a renaissance.”

The matching grant was awarded to the City’s Redevelopment Department by the Indiana Office of Tourism Development. The City has focused its efforts on creating an Arts and Cultural District as a way to continue the momentum in its historic downtown.

“NOCO will become a regional draw for citizens and visitors alike,” said Moore. “The money will help us convert shipping containers into artisan cubes and rail cars into restaurants. The area will easily link to other tourism attractions in the area.”

Moore praised the City’s Redevelopment Commission and Public Arts Council for supporting the creation of NOCO. The project has already received funding from the Clark-Floyd Counties Convention Tourism Bureau.

“Grant Administrator Delynn Rutherford and Public Arts Administrator Dawn Spyker worked very hard to make this happen. I’m glad their persistence and tenacity is paying-off,” said Moore. “There’s so much support for this project. I’m thrilled that the hard work of so many is getting state recognition and well deserved support.”
