Agency Mission Statement or Description: The LLS mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world, provides free information and support services, and is the voice for all blood cancer patients seeking access to quality, affordable, coordinated care. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® (LLS) exists to find cures and ensure access to treatments for all blood cancer patients. LLS is the world's largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancers. LLS also provides the latest public health and professional education about blood cancers. Year established: 1949 Counties/regions serviced: All counties in KY and 16 counties in Southern Indiana Focus areas: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) provides peer-to-peer and group support opportunities for blood cancer patients, survivors, and their families; financial support, including patient travel assistance, insurance co-pay assistance, and financial assistance for the cost of specific medical tests for chronic leukemia patients; advocates policy positions that improve the quality of life of those with blood cancer, as well as policies that accelerate progress toward cures for blood cancers; and, invests in life-saving research that has led to advanced treatments and increased survival rates among blood cancer patients. We hold various fundraising events throughout the year to raise awareness and funds for research for cancer cures. Organizational Goals: To support high-priority research, generate predictable revenue that supports our mission, and ensure affordable and timely access to the standard of care and best-in-class support services. Current Programs: -
Light the Night: a fundraising campaign where friends, families, and co-workers form teams to participate in an inspirational evening walk. Illuminated lanterns are carried in honor of survivors (white) in support of patients and finding cures (red), and in remembrance of those we’ve lost (gold). -
Man & Woman of the Year: a national 10-week fundraising campaign in which 16 influential community leaders participate to raise funds for research to find a cure. Candidates compete in honor of two local child survivors, the boy and girl of the year. -
Students of the Year: a national 7-week fundraising campaign in which 10 high school students participate to raise funds for research to find a cure. Candidates compete in honor of local child survivors, and the winner receives a $2,500 college scholarship. -
Student Series: a service learning programs for primary & secondary public or private schools (K-12). Students learn about service, leadership, and philanthropy while collecting donations in honor of local student blood cancer survivors. Interactive skits and presentations are used to raise awareness and teach students the importance of service. All schools that register to participate receive a STEM curriculum for their staff. On average, 227,000 Kentucky & Southern Indiana students are served with the project in 510 schools. -
Team in Training: an endurance sports training program that allows participants to raise money for LLS and its services. -
Patient Access: provides informational resources, financial assistance, and emotional support groups for blood cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers. Impact in community: an estimated 15,279 people are served in the Kentucky & Southern Indiana chapter area, including patients and family members via patient services. 6,000 people participate in the Louisville Light the Night event at Slugger Field on Sept 23, 2017. How 1si members can help your organization: September is blood cancer Awareness Month LLS is seeking sponsors for their fundraising events: Light the Night, Student Series, Man and Woman of the Year, Students of the Year and Team in Training. The Light the Night walk event Sept 23 at Slugger Field and Waterfront Park is centrally located in downtown Louisville – we’d love to have corporate teams and Friends & Family teams register and helps us raise awareness.
