The Center for Women and Families dedicates new sign at their Southern Indiana Campus



NEW ALBANY, IN. (June 29, 2016)- The Center for Women and Families (CWF) dedicated a new sign donated by Signarama Downtown with a ribbon cutting on Wednesday, June 29th for their Southern Indiana Campus hosted by One Southern Indiana (1si). The event was attended by Indiana State Representative District 72, Ed Clere, 1si President & CEO Wendy Dant Chesser, 1si Ambassadors, CWF staff and the public.

The Center for Women and Families’ Southern Indiana Campus is an emergency shelter that houses victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The shelter opened in 1999 and has 10 bedrooms that can house 10 women and up to 20 children at a time. On average, they house between 200-250 women and children in Southern Indiana each year.
“Our new sign is more than just a sign; it serves as an opportunity to let Southern Indiana know that we are here in the community offering services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault,” said Marta Miranda, CEO of The Center for Women and Families. “We thank Signarama Downtown for donating the sign and One Southern Indiana for helping us raise awareness of our mission.”

ABOUT THE CENTER FOR WOMEN AND FAMILIES:
The Center for Women and Families (CWF) began as part of the YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association) in 1912. A rape crisis program was established in 1975, and in 1977 the YWCA opened the first domestic violence shelter in the state of Kentucky. The CWF incorporated as an independent, private, non-profit organization in 1989, after which they expanded their violence intervention services into nine counties across Kentucky and Southern Indiana. The Southern Indiana Campus Shelter opened in Floyd County, Indiana, in 1999. All of the direct services provided by the CWF are free and confidential to all people and their children, who have been affected by intimate partner violence or sexual assault (regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, religion, national origin or disability).
A variety of residential and nonresidential services are provided by the CWF, including emergency shelter, transitional housing, counseling and advocacy.
